Fånefjell

            Fånefjell is a 745 m high mountain in Bygland municipality in Aust-Agder. It looks like a nest in the Byglandsfjord lake, which is 202 meters above sea level, with a steep mountain side on the south side. The road past Fånefjell was considered one of the two most difficult parts of the road through Setesdal. The climbing ladder was the most difficult, then came the Fånekleivene.

At Fånefjell there are four generations of roads, along four completely different paths. The oldest roads past Fånefjell are riding roads and were called the Fånekleivene. The oldest riding road goes around the mountain on the east side and dates to the 16th century. 
The first roadway came in 1842, also it has a path over the mountain.
 The third road is a particularly interesting road historical cultural monument from 1923. This road route goes around the mountain on the outside towards the fjord, and on a spectacular part where the mountain goes steeply into the fjord, the road is blown into the vertical mountain side like a so-called half-tunnel. This semi-tunnel is often depicted. The fourth and newest route goes through the mountains: the Funnel Mountain Tunnel.

The semi-tunnel on the outer side of Fånefjell made it possible to ride a bus along the Byglandsfjord. Setesdal Bilruter started the bus route from Ose to Bykle in 1920, and a few years later the route was extended down to Byglandsfjord. The subway is now closed to all traffic due to. landslides.

In the National roadmap for roads, bridges and road-related cultural monuments, the cultural monuments at Fånefjell are referred to as the Fånefjell road environment. In 2009, the road environment at Fånefjell was protected by the Cultural Heritage Act.
