R.I.P. - a photo on Flickriver

R.I.P.

            Last night I received an e-mail from my nephew informing me that his mother, Vernie, my former sister-in-law, had passed away yesterday. I first met her when I was 7 years old and she married my older brother when I was eight. They were married for more than 30 years or until my brother decided that bird photography was his first love and divorced her after 30 some years of marriage and married a fellow birder. Because we believed in a lot of the same things, Vernie and I remained close up until four or five years ago when she developed Alzheimer's disease and it became difficult for me to communicate with her. During her life she was not a stay-at-home mom, but worked at a number of jobs until she finally earned her teaching credential and became an elementary school teacher in California. She raised a son, my nephew, who is a high school teacher and who has written several books on reading and writing, and gives reading and writing workshops all over the world on weekends and is someone we are all very proud of. I owe my love of reading and learning to her because pretty much no one else in my family gave a damn about those things when I was growing up. She was an extremely beautiful person both physically and intellectually and I am going to miss her. (This photo  of us in the early 90's was taken in front of her townhouse in Laguna Beach where she lived after her divorce and before she had to go into Assisted Living.)
