Just like it was No. 19 - a photo on Flickriver

            Once upon a time, Southern Pacific's Shasta Route mail train was known as the Klamath. The southbound (I know, timetable westbound) train called at Dunsmuir, California in the midmorning. Here, the hot PTLAT is changing crews for the next leg of its journey to Los Angeles, at nearly the same time as mail train No. 19 would have been making its station stop.

There is a lot of classic Southern Pacific in this photograph. Aside from the SP 8301’s deleted class lights, both of the prominent SDs in the image are still adorned with the full Espee light packages. Since rails first reached the upper Sacramento River Canyon, railroaders have been going to work in Dunsmuir. You have to wonder what the guy dumpster diving at left is looking for.

This film was lost by the processor for about nine months. Shot in summer 1988, I finally received it in spring 1989.
