More from Union Pacific's Pilot Rock Industrial Lead

            During a trip to LaGrande during August 2006, I saw a Union Pacific local switching in Pendleton, Oregon.  Since it looked like it might be going down the old Pilot Rock branch, I bailed off I-84 and went to Rieth siding, were the branch left the mainline.

My intuition was rewarded when the UP Pendleton Switcher showed up for a quick flip to Pilot Rock, the end of a 14 mile branch from Rieth. The experience reminded me a lot of a chase on the abandoned Heppner Branch a dozen years earlier. This train also had a pair of second generation EMD hood units back to back, and two flats on the drawbar.  

In this image, the train is passing a small grain elevator at Sparks, about six and a half miles from the mainline. The weather was just as hot and dry as the photo implies.
