Highball Lakeview - a photo on Flickriver

Highball Lakeview

            A Great Western train departs Lakeview, Oregon on the first day of spring 1986. Since it was a Friday, the trailing geep, side dump and flatcar with crane would be left at Alturas, California, where GWR interchanged with Southern Pacific. They would work their way back to Lakeview doing trackwork during the following week. 

At the time, GWR was running one revenue freight train to Alturas on Fridays. The rest of the workweek was spent on trackwork projects.  For approximately 50 miles between Lakeview and Alturas, there were no sidings on the line.  There was simply no place where the worktrain could clear up for revenue moves. 

The chopnose geep would return to Lakeview with whatever empties Southern Pacific had left at Alturas. It would be used in Lakeview during the following week to spot empties and pull loads.  The following Friday, the cycle would repeat.
