Nice place - shame about the name - a photo on Flickriver

Our adaptation of the title of a song by The Monks may be slightly inelegant, but it gives us permission to talk about the delightful name of the street in which we see these buses - Hanging Ditch. This is no euphemism, executions really did take place here at one time, but by the time this photo was taken its function was much more prosaic.

In the centre of the photo you can see a yellow 'bus station' sign, and off to the right was Manchester's Cannon Street bus station - an arrangement barely deserving of the title, as it was in fact just a small collection of bus shelters. Several services from the north of the city terminated here, including the 35 to Bury - which was mainly operated by Salford City Transport. It may seem odd that the dominant operator on a Manchester - Bury service was Salford, but in truth the route passed mainly through areas that were Salford 'territory' as Whitefield and Prestwich had had their tramways operated on their behalf by Salford.

The Manchester bus at the back has just arrived from a trip on the 60, the Blackley (Victoria Avenue) circular, and Manchester could also sometimes (not always) be found on the 35 also. And Bury had a share too, so the 35 could be quite colourful; and just across the street North Western had their terminus of their service 3 to Flixton. So Cannon Street could be a varied and interesting place to stop and watch the buses go by.

Most of the buildings in this photograph still stand: the Corn Exchange on the left has been cleaned up and is now a haven for foodies, while Thomson House is now the Printworks, an entertainment complex. But the petrol station, and the British Road Services building are long gone; as is Cannon Street bus station. But you can see a Salford bus identical to this one restored and on display at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester, along with many other vintage buses from the region.
