Manchester's a city of red and blue - a photo on Flickriver

There was probably no thought by the designer of being even-handed between Manchester's two great football teams when creating this attractive timetable cover - other editions are red and yellow.

But it shows that the city was proud of its town hall, and of its buses. The bus is a Crossley, built just over the city border in Stockport, and was one of the 'modified Streamliner' type that were used to replace the last of the city's trams - the last one ran a year before this timetable was published.

The Museum of Transport has an extensive archive of timetables, maps, documents, photographs and other small objects alongside its collection of vintage buses. Our archive is frequently used by transport historians and authors for their research, and sometimes by genealogists as we have many staff records from Manchester Corporation Transport.
