One that didn't make it - a photo on Flickriver

From time to time, we talk in our Flickr captions about buses that have gone to the 'great bus depot in the sky' or a similar semi-joking phrase. the reality is that buses are commodities, made to be used; wear out; and eventually discarded, usually for scrap.

So the grim reality is that a bus is taken out of service, and is then scrapped. The exact age when a bus might come off the road for the final time varies. It might be a road accident that's uneconomical to repair; an expensive failed component; a failed MOT test, or just the expiry of a test certificate; or it might be simply because the new replacements have been delivered.

We don't know exactly which one of those precipitated the end of Greater Manchester Transport 7060 in 1985. But the end was clearly nigh as it waited, windows broken, at Bennett Street yard in Ardwick; and its next and final journey was to a Barnsley bus breaker.

Fortunately one of this batch of buses survived: the first one, 7001, which is today restored to its 1972 appearance and on display at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.
