Made in Lancashire - mainly - a photo on Flickriver

Lancashire United Transport was once the biggest independent bus operator in the UK. Its red buses served a stretch of south Lancashire in a diamond-shaped area between St Helens, Bolton, Warrington and Manchester. At various times it ran trams, trolleybuses and motor buses and the company only disappeared after being bought by Greater Manchester Transport in 1976.

For many years, LUT was loyal to two suppliers - Gardner diesel engines, and bodywork from Northern Counties in Wigan. Gardner engines were legendary for their fuel economy and reliability, so they were a natural choice for a bus company that watched the pennies; and Northern Counties bodywork was tough and made to last.

Both these buses had Gardner engines and Northern Counties coachwork. Their chassis were from Guy in Wolverhampton (on the left) and Daimler in Coventry (on the right); but most of both buses was built within a few limes from the LUT headquarters in Atherton.

Lancashire United buses have disappeared from the roads, but you can see buses from the LUT fleet - including buses looking just like these - at the Museum of Transport Greater Manchester.
