5810 passes 2007 in 1980

This photo shows the grimy, workaday side of Manchester before the fountains, piazzas and cultural attractions that have made Manchester such an enticing place in the twenty-first century.

Greater Manchester Transport bus number 5810 was on Oldham Street in March 1980, passing the '2007 A.D.' clothes shop - who remembers it? It's raining, of course, and the bus is coming towards the end of its life so it's a little unkempt.

The bus was new to Stockport Corporation in their smart red and ivory colour scheme. But Stockport was absorbed by the new SELNEC Passenger Transport Executive in 1969 who bought newer, more modern buses and by 1980 this one was one of a fast-dwindling number of rear-loader double deck buses. Its destination blind is twisted and the fleet numbers have mostly rubbed off. But 5810 was probably still healthy mechanically and would have given a spirited ride for damp Mancunians.

The Museum of Transport Greater Manchester has several Stockport buses in its collection including one, 5871, that has been restored to this orange livery as a reminder of the seventies.
