GM Buses in Stockport bus station - a photo on Flickriver

People tend to remember Greater Manchester Transport for its orange buses, but it changed the face of the region in other ways too. It invested heavily in improving bus stations to improve travel facilities, and one of the biggest examples was Stockport's new bus station built on the site of waste ground that had been used for parking out-of-service buses.

The new facility was a big improvement over the previous arrangements, with bus stops scattered around the Mersey Square area. After bus deregulation in 1986, the bus station was still owned by GMPTE but was used by the buses of the separate bus companies serving Stockport.

The biggest was GM Buses, which of course was the old GMT split away from GMPTE - and in fact every bus we can see here is a GM Buses vehicle that had once been a GMT bus.

Stockport bus station is still in basically the same form today, but at the time of writing (November 2015) there is a proposal to replace it with a new bus/rail interchange.
