Winter Horse - San Luis Valley - a photo on Flickriver

            I think Colorado's San Luis Valley is one of the forgotten places in the state. Even among residents of the Centennial State, it's just that thing that's between the Sangre de Cristo and the San Juan mountain ranges and where you go if you want to see the Great Sand Dunes. I rather loved exploring the San Luis Valley. There's a rural beauty to this part of the state that seems like it was brought in from someplace back east. Indeed, take a drive through parts of the San Luis Valley and you'd be forgiven for thinking that you were in Pennsylvania as you pass an Amish buggy on the road (the San Luis Valley has a large population of Amish).

As much as I loved the crown jewels of Colorado like the Maroon Bells and Rocky Mountain National Park, I loved finding the forgotten corners of it as well. Taking a drive on some forgotten road in the San Luis Valley brought me as much joy and contentment as witnessing alpenglow on Hallett Peak. There's something real and honest about the lesser known spots. That's something I'll never forget from my time there.
