             Coal loads in two directions

....southbound on the former Atlantic Coast Line's bridge across the James River, and eastbound on the former Chesapeake and Ohio's James River Line, west of downtown Richmond, Virginia.

The former C&O line in the foreground has long been associated with being primarily an artery for coal loads; current operational patterns even have the empty hoppers going west on the Buckingham Branch Railroad via Charlottesville, so that the James River line is now primarily one-way eastbound.

Coal was not a commodity much associated with the ACL "back in the day" (it was merged with the Seaboard Air Line in 1967 to form the Seaboard Coast Line); speedy streamliners, hot piggyback trains, and agricultural products, including northbound Florida produce were more top-of-the-mind then, but population and economic growth in the "southeast coastal six", as the ACL referred to the states it served, combined with the economics of unit trains have increased the prevalence of the black diamonds at this location in more recent years.

And it was nice of the CSX to pose the eastbound in this spot for a couple of hours, also.
