288/289 Broad Street Birmingham (obs,0353)

            288/289 Broad street is the hole behind the Persil advert The photograph was taken to aid planners who were to decide what would be built in the space which was probably created by a German bomb. The space was eventually filled by the BBC canteen.
We are looking along Broad Street towards the City Centre, a little beyond the Belisha crossing and Bridge Street junction we see the listed and still surviving Municipal Bank building (T. Cecil Howitt 1931-33) it now part of the University of Birmingham. Out of sight but on the corner of Bridge Street was the (then) new Birmingham Register Office, it was built in 1951 and has been described in Pevsners Architectural guide as "modest", it has been demolished.
Between the 'Griffin' lorry and the van a glimpse of the fine buildings which formed Easy Row can just be seen. The shops are the typical small shops which made up Broad Street, next to the Persil sign was Charles C Williams at 291 (oil importer). The upper storey of the building was owned by Etna Lighting and Heating and unfortunately Kelly's directory do not list the rented shops in that block apart from the corner premises which was Transglobe Travel at number 295 and next door at 294 was a Surgical Appliance maker. Above the shiny car at number 286 B Hobbs sells Grates, Ranges and Fireplaces under the name of 'Masterplaces'
Rather than clone it out I have left the arrow in as an example of how these pictures were used.
The current view shows Broad Street with the Metro extension being built, the track is complete but overhead wiring is only half done
