Waipio Valley from a New Angle - a photo on Flickriver

Waipio Valley is a famous spot on Hawaii's Big Island. In ancient times, Hawaii's royalty lived here, and today it contains the steepest paved road in the U.S.--with an average grade of 30%, it requires 4wd even on the pavement.

The taro farms of Waipio Valley are fed by nearly-2000-ft-tall waterfalls in the back of the valley. About a year ago, I discovered that someone had managed to hike to the top of Hiilawe Falls, proving that it was possible, and I realized that from that spot, Polaris perfectly aligned over the valley.

I set out to find the route to the top of Hiilawe Falls. It took me no fewer than four attempts, but I finally was successful last night. I spent innumerable hours four-wheeling up and down (inevitably dead-ending) logging roads, hiking through sugarcane fields, walking in rivers, flailing against the jungle, and falling in slippery streambeds before I finally located the spot.

I stood on the edge of the precipice and took this photo of Waipio during a period of cooperative clouds. The valley was lit by a 90% moon. The route was grueling enough that I am reasonably confident that no one else has ever done star trails from here before.
