The Mt. Whitney Night Photography Extravaganza

I've had a poster of Kurt Lawson's "The 97 Switchbacks at Night" image on my wall for a while, and for the last year I've been dreaming of reshooting it on an even grander scale. Starting in February, I began recruiting people for a trip. Kurt was eager to join us and reshoot his image using digital equipment instead of medium format film.

We split into two groups. Kurt, Matthew Saville, and Wade Meade headed into the Whitney zone. Cory Kobel (an old high school friend) and I hiked to Meysan Lake. After being delayed due to a freak storm, Cory and I spent the day doing the horrible hike up Mt. Irvine. Irvine, at 13,800 ft tall, enjoys ridiculous views of the whole area. We set up four cameras and passed the night tending to them and freezing.

Matt and Kurt set up cameras on Wotan's Throne, which is above the Whitney base camp. Wade strapped on seven headlamps and hiked all the way to the summit and back during the night. Naked, for the giggles. At the end of the night, the dayhikers who started at Whitney Portal at like 1 AM can be seen hiking up the switchbacks.

The hike was long and the loads were heavy, but I'm happy with how it all came out. I'll be posting many more images in the days ahead.
