Outstretched Against Time - a photo on Flickriver

            I drove an old Honda Accord down the 13-mile "four wheel drive" dirt road to the Patriarch Grove in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, eliciting confused looks from numerous people in more capable vehicles. I planned to film night timelapse of the milky way behind this tree, but I ran into two show-stopping problems. First, while filming a daytime sequence, one of the motor drivers on my timelapse dolly apparently overheated and quite violently exploded, effectively bricking the dolly. Second, and perhaps worse, it rained all night long, which almost never happens in that area. I passed the night hiding in the car, rather than sleeping under the stars, as I had hoped. All I have are daytime images.

Bristlecone Pines are the longest-living organisms known, and can reach ages of over 5,000 years. This particular tree was particularly gnarled after completing what undoubtedly was a few-thousand-year life.
