A High-Altitude Night Hike - a photo on Flickriver

I've had a poster of Kurt Lawson's "The 97 Switchbacks at Night" image on my wall for a while, and for the last year I've been dreaming of reshooting it on an even grander scale. Starting in February, I began recruiting people for a trip. Kurt was eager to join us and reshoot his image using digital equipment instead of medium format film.

We split into two groups. Kurt, Matthew Saville, and Wade Meade headed into the Whitney zone. Cory Kobel (an old high school friend) and I hiked to Meysan Lake. After being delayed due to a freak storm, Cory and I spent the day doing the horrible hike up Mt. Irvine. Irvine, at 13,800 ft tall, enjoys ridiculous views of the whole area. We set up four cameras and passed the night tending to them and freezing.

A few early Perseid meteors are visible in the sky. Wade strapped on seven headlamps and hiked all the way to the 14,500-ft summit and back during the night. His light is the bright one that starts at Trail Camp. Dayhikers who started at Whitney Portal at like 1 AM created the dimmer light trail below Trail Camp. Hwy 395 is visible on the right side of the frame, leading toward Lone Pine and Bishop. The slight lightening of the sky on the right is the first light of sunrise. In the timelapse from this angle, you can see flashes in clouds to the north due to faraway lightning storms. This image is stacked from ~100 1-minute exposures with a Rokinon 14mm f/2.8.
