Heaven and Hell

            I headed out to Kilauea Crater, in Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island of Hawaii, tonight. Kilauea has a pool of lava in its crater, and at night the glow of the lava illuminates the plume of smoke.

I intended to shoot timelapse of the milky way over the crater. However, it rained the entire time I was there, and visibility was poor, at best. I didn't film any timelapse.

I stood around in the wind and rain and slowly became cold and drenched. After about three hours and much discussion of packing up and heading home, I looked up and saw a moonbow in the clouds. I quickly set up my camera and took a few images, knowing that each one could be my last due to the rain that would inevitably blow onto my lens. This is a panorama stitched from five photos with my Rokinon 24mm f/1.4. The moonbow is the only one I've ever seen (I did a failed trip to Yosemite to chase them in 2011), and it disappeared after about 15 minutes. My 6D and the lens survived the drenching without any issues.
