The Chain Shop, Mushroom Green, Cradley Heath 17/01/2015

            The chain making workshop shown here is the last working example to be found in the Black Country. It is the only chain shop at Mushroom Green to have survived, having been restored in the 1970s by the Black Country Society. It is now operated by Industrial Heritage Stronghold, a company run by the well known Black Country sculptor Luke Perry.

Located not far from Dudley and Cradley Heath, Mushroom Green is a quaint collection of historic buildings dating back almost two centuries. It is believed that the hamlet came into existence in the eighteenth century as a result of the coming of the nail makers. Later when nail making became less profitable, the trade gave way to chain making for which Cradley Heath is noted.
