Alfred Guillou - Goodbye! [1892] - a photo on Flickriver

            Alfred Guillou (Concarneau. September 12, 1844 - March 22, 1926) received much applause for this painting. Presented at the Salon of 1892, it was immediately bought by the State and even exhibited at the Universal Exhibition of 1900, where it won a medal. In it we see the dramatic scene of a boat caught in a storm. Out at sea, the ship ends up capsizing and the sailor and his little son are left at the mercy of the water. There is no horizon, the sea swallows up the entire canvas surrounding the helpless figures. The man holds the child, who is now a corpse. The sailor embraces the body and, before giving it over to the ocean, gives it a kiss, or perhaps tries a last mouth-to-mouth to resuscitate it. From the lifeless body, we know that it is useless. And the sailor knows it too.
