Söderåsen - a photo on Flickriver

Söderåsen

            The heart of Söderåsen National Park is the deep fissure valley Skäralid, which cuts eight kilometers into Söderåsen. The dramatic topography is best experienced from Kopparhatten and the valley invites to exciting hikes. The height difference down to Skärån at the bottom of the valley is a full 90 meters and the view of Söderåsen's most species-rich and exciting fissure valleys is breathtaking.

Description of natural values
Sprickdalen with its large climatic and altitude differences means that several different plant communities are naturally found here. Here are e.g. forest bingle, small nunnery herb, chives, musk duck, yellow strips, magic grape, columbine, etc. The diversity in terms of mosses, fungi and lichens is also great, e.g. is about thirty red-listed lichens occurring in Skäralid. The fern flora is also rich and here is the only known place in Sweden of the shadow bracken. Among the fungi, the red-listed southern soot tick and coral thorn fungus are worth mentioning together with the gray chanterelle found in the old meadow beech forest. The beech forest at Skäralid attracts large crowds of finches and boulders that overwinter during good ollon years. The area also has mosquitoes, jays, wood pigeons, ravens and herons. The whooper swan nests in the pond by nature. One might think that the forest seems primeval forest-like, but it is in fact strongly culturally influenced. Stone walls, cairns, wild apples, hawthorn bushes and a timber railway all testify to the human impact, although it becomes increasingly difficult to detect these signs when the forest takes over.
