Chainsaw (T063) and his mom, Whidbey II (T065)

            The male transient killer whale Chainsaw with his jagged dorsal fin, is easily distinguishable from others. (Also known as Biggs Killer Whales)  It is unknown how he came about to get the unique cuts on his dorsal fin, but suspected that it happened when he was younger.  
This day we observed him swimming with his mom, never getting too far apart. Born in 1978, it is uncommon for a transient whale to stay with their mothers, yet Chainsaw likes to keep his close by.
He has been reported to travel up the coast of Canada, as far as southeast Alaska where he is known as Zorro to whale researchers and naturalists.
Bigg’s/Transient killer whales are known for eating marine mammals, differing from the southern resident orca pods who feed on salmon. Because of this difference, there is lots of food for them and they are thriving and increasing in numbers as opposed to the resident orcas whose numbers are dwindling.
