London Transport E/1 tram No. 559 @ Elephant & Castle - Jun/Jul 1952

An old photograph of London Transport (LT) E/1 class tram No. 559 showing '38 - Embankment via Old Kent Rd & Westr' destination blinds. The car has 'Last Tram Week' adverts so this would have been taken between the 29 Jun and 5 July 1952.

There are no details on the photo reverse other than the name 'Stanley Newman', it is printed on 'Crown Copyright Reserved' paper which was in common use after WW2 when it was sold off as forces surplus stock.

The building with the advert hoarding in front of it was the war damaged South London Palace of Varieties (it never re-opened after 1941 bomb damage, marked as 'ruin' on 1952 map.) - more at www.arthurlloyd.co.uk/SouthLonPalace.htm " 🚃

No. 559 was an ex London County Council Tramways (LCC) car, it was built in 1929 by English Electric seating 27/46 and ran on Mountain & Gibson maximum traction class 4.LCC trucks. From new it had trolley poles plus a plough carrier to run off overhead or conduit.

These particular trams were known as 'Reconstructed Subway Cars', because when built they took the fleet number, trucks, and electrical equipment from class F and G single deck cars that had run through the Kingsway Subway which was being enlarged to take double deck cars.

Its ownership transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) in 1933 and in Sep 1939 it had driver screens/vestibules fitted. In Jul 1952 it was officially withdrawn from service and disposed of (broken up or sold) in the Penhall Road Works/Yard, the parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closing the following month.
