LT E/3 tram No. 1990 @ Brixton - Apr 1952

One of a collection of 3" x 2" amateur transport photographs, all dating between 1947 and 1952. This one is of London Transport (LT) E/3 class tram No. 1990 at the Brixton plough change point/pit.

The reverse of this photo is annotated with "E/3 1990 at Brixton changeover point, 3rd April 1952".

This was the last week of service 33 (and trams through the Kingsway Subway) - last day of operation was 5 April 1952. At this time, 33 was the only tram route left at Norwood depot and in the area, Norwood's other services converted in January 1952 and the last of the Brixton Hill routes in April 1951." 🚃

No. 1990 was an ex London County Council Tramways (LCC) car built in 1930 by Hurst Nelson seating 28/46 and running on EMB (LCC class 4A) maximum traction trucks, getting driver/platform vestibules in 1931. Its ownership transferred to the London Passenger Transport Board (LPTB) in 1933 and in Jul 1952 it was withdrawn from service and sent to Penhall Road Works to be disposed of (broken up or sold).

The parts of the London tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to trolleybus/bus operation closing in Jul 1952.
