Llandudno & Colwyn - Guy Arab/Daimler COG5/ex Darwen tram

An old photograph of 'Llandudno and Colwyn Bay Electric Railway' (L&CB) buses and tram (with a single decker just visible inside) at the Rhos-on-Sea Depot. From right to left are:-
🚏 No. 3, registration GUF128, ex Southdown, showing 'Llandudno - West Shore - Rhos Prom via Penryn Bay' destination blind,
🚏 No. 1, registration HTN231, ex Newcastle,
🚏 No. 23 or 24, ex Darwen.

The photo reverse is stamped with the photographer and/or negative owner name J. C. Gillham (aka John C. Gillham).

No. 3 was ex Southdown (SD) bus No. 428, new in Aug 1944. It comprised a Guy Arab II 5LW chassis and a Northern Counties body seating 56 (H30/26R). In 1956 it was withdrawn from SD service and sold to L&CB who were building up their bus fleet ready for the closure of their tramways system, it was withdrawn from service by L&CB just the next year. Unfortunately I have no details as to its movements after being withdrawn.

No. 1 was ex Newcastle Corporation Transport (NCT) bus No. 231, new in Oct 1939. It comprised a Daimler COG5 chassis and a Northern Coachbuilders body seating 56 (H31/25R). In May 1952 it was rebuilt by NCT, the revised seating shows O31/25R, so rebuilt as open top, although other sources show it being converted to open top 1956/7 by L&CB? It was withdrawn from NCT service in 1956 and sold to L&CB who were building up their bus fleet ready for the closure of their tramways system, it was withdrawn from service by L&CB in 1961. Unfortunately I have no details as to its movements after being withdrawn.

Nos. 23/24 were ex 'Darwen Corporation Tramways' tram Nos. 24/23, built by English Electric (EE) in 1936 seating 24/32 and running on EE maximum traction bogies. Darwen tramways closed in Oct 1946 and the two all metal centre entrance Darwen cars numbered 23 and 24 were sold to Llandudno who swapped the numbers around, No. 23 becoming 24, and No. 24 becoming 23. Both cars were withdrawn in 1954 and scrapped after the parts of the L&CB tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Mar 1956.

"This wonderful car, and its sister 23, were the pride of the tiny Darwin tramway fleet but their 4ft track gauge restricted their second-hand appeal (although subsequently rebuilt to 3ft 6in for Llandudno).

Because of a Board of Trade restriction, none of Llandudno's double-deck cars were allowed to operate with passengers on the upper decks over the exposed Little Orme section if winds exceeded 50mph (as noted by an annenometer positioned at Toll Gate). This meant that their ex-Bournemouth open-top cars could only run the full route from Llandudno subject to these restrictions. However, the two Darwin cars were restricted to local services at either end of the route. 24 was the Colwyn Bay local car, running from Greenfield Road (as seen) to Church Road, Rhos-on-Sea which was adjacent to their depot. The Llandudno local car (23) had to run "light" from the depot over the Little Orme each day to take up local service from Nant-y-Gamar Road, Craig-y-Don to West Shore."
