Leeds ex Southampton trams @ Farsley (a)

An old photograph of Leeds City Tramways (LCT) ex Southampton Corporation Tramways (SCT) tram bodies awaiting their fate at a farm in Farsley. The trucks and electrical equipment went separately to Kirkstall Road Works and were scrapped or used for spares.

The photograph is stamped on the reverse as having been taken by Robert F. Mack (Bob Mack). An almost identical photograph was taken by Jim Soper and is on page 1002 of v3 of 'Leeds Transport'.

These SCT built car bodies were either sent straight to the farm from Southampton or arrived via Kirkstall works having been given an LCT number but never having been in service. All were purchased by LCT in 1950, No's. 14, 21, 22, 37, 96, and 98 going direct, No's 102 (LCT No. 308), 19 (LCT No. 311), and 100 (LCT No. 312), going via Kirkstall.

The bodies were spread over a few separate fields, between their arrival in 1950 and late 1959 all were eventually broken up and/or burned.

The parts of the Southampton and Leeds tramways systems that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Dec 1949 and Nov 1959 respectively.
