Leeds tram No. 281 and AEC Regent No. 415

            An old photograph of  Leeds City Tramways (LCT) tram No. 281 and AEC Regent III No. 415 (registration JUG648) outside the now demolished Fairbairn Lawson Combe Barbour works at the junction of Wellington Street and Wellington Road. No. 281 is showing service '3 - Harehills' destination blinds, the AEC is showing route 71 (I can only make out 'Leeds' and 'Rawdon' on the blind). 

The photo reverse is stamped with the photographer (and/or negative owner) name of A. D. Packer.

No. 281 was ex Manchester Corporation Tramways (MCT)  'Pilcher' class car No. 104, built by MCT and going into service Jun 1931, seating 22/40 and running on a 4 wheel Peckham P35 truck. In Mar 1948 it was withdrawn from service and along with seven other cars was sold to LCT.

When received by LCT it was reconditioned and given a light blue and white livery, first going into service Oct 1948. In Jan 1950 it was reliveried in Matterface royal blue and white, the truck was replaced with an EMB Hornless, and a drivers seat was fitted (which proved unpopular and was later removed). It had a final livery change to red & white lined in Apr 1952, was withdrawn from service when the Kirkstall Abbey and Crompton Road tram services closed in Apr 1954, and the following month was burned at Lowfields Road Permanent Way Yard.

The parts of the Leeds tramways system that had not already been withdrawn or transferred to bus operation closed in Nov 1959.

JUG648 was first in LCT service May 1947 carrying fleet No. 415 comprising a AEC Regent III chassis No. 0961787 and Roe body No. GO2303 seating 56 (H31/25R). It was withdrawn from service in Oct 1963 and sold to W. North (a dealer) in Jun 1964.

The bus was on service 71 CBS (Then Leeds Bus Station) to Guiseley and was the replacement for the Leeds to Guiseley tram service. The via blind says Kirkstall, Horsforth, Rawdon. West Yorkshire took over this route circa 1956.
