"Zwin"  comes from a German word meaning " a lagoon alon the shore " .
 The Zwin is a former branch of the North Sea in Belgium and the Netherlands, now silted up.
 The Zwin is the largest salted area of  Belgium. Mudflats and salt marshes, located behind the beach and dunes are partially or completely flooded by the sea at high tide.
 Created at the tidal wave of 1134, it allowed the city of Bruges to have direct access to the North Sea.
 But silt and silted up from the twelfth century. From the fifteenth century, navigation was limited to the Lock (Sluis), no longer possible to Bruges which led to the decline of the city. From the late eighteenth century and during the nineteenth century, what remains of the inlet was reclaimed.

Le Zwin est un ancien bras de la mer du Nord en Belgique et aux Pays-Bas, aujourd'hui ensablé.
Le Zwin est le plus grand territoire salé de Belgique. Les vasières et prés-salés, situés derrière la plage et les dunes, sont partiellement ou totalement inondés par la mer à marée haute.
Créé lors du raz-de-marée de 1134, il permit à la ville de Bruges d'avoir un accès direct à la mer du Nord.
Mais il s'envasa et s'ensabla dès le XIIe siècle. À partir du XVe siècle, la navigation se limitait à L'Écluse (Sluis), ne permettant plus d'atteindre Bruges ce qui provoqua ainsi le déclin de la cité. De la fin du XVIIIe siècle et durant le XIXe siècle, ce qui reste du bras de mer fut polderisé.

"Zwin" viene de una palabra alemana que significa "una laguna a lo largo de la costa".
 El Zwin es un antiguo brazo del Mar del Norte en Bélgica y los Países Bajos, ahora colmatado.
 El Zwin es el área más grande de Bélgica con sal. Marismas y salinas, que se encuentra detrás de la playa y las dunas están parcialmente o totalmente inundada por el mar en marea alta.
 Creado en el maremoto de 1134, permitió a la ciudad de Brujas para tener acceso directo al Mar del Norte.
 Sin embargo, limo y colmatado en el siglo XII. Desde el siglo XV, la navegación se limita a la Seguridad (Sluis), ya no es posible a Brujas que llevó a la decadencia de la ciudad. Desde finales del siglo XVIII y durante el siglo XIX, lo que queda de la entrada fue reclamada.
