You've heard of tiny houses...this was a tiny church building we saw in Rutledge, Tennessee. Henderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church-Rutledge TN (Grainger County)
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built 1890 (Established in 1833)

This is one of the oldest churches established in the state of Tennessee. The origins of the AME Zion African American congressional in the Rutledge area dates back to 1833.

Henderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is a historic African-American church. It is a frame building with a gable entrance, a vernacular design that is commonly seen in rural African-American churches built in the twentieth century.

Between 1833 and 1887, members of the congregation held worship services in each member's home. From 1887 to 1890, members were able to hold worship services at the former Grainger County Courthouse as the Presbyterian minister who had purchased the building granted them use of the building.

In 1890, Dr. Joseph Hofmeister, a local physician, an honored member of the Masonic Fraternity, and elder of the Presbyterian church, donated the land that this church was built and still stands on today. The church was named in honor of Dr. Hoffmeister's daughter, Mary E Hofmeister Henderson (who married George M Henderson). Some of the lumber used in the church was from the old county courthouse.

The building remained in use until 2001. It is one of the oldest churches in the Grainger County.
