#EmergencyLessons, EU and UNICEF for education in countries affected by emergencies

In the world, 462 million school-aged children and teenagers live in countries affected by wars or other natural disasters and around 75 million need an educational support. #EmergencyLessons shows – and celebrates – this, with lessons from children living through crises around the world. Tuesday 6th December in Brussels children, teachers and volunteers all around the world came for a meeting at the Parliament.

When emergencies hit – from natural disasters, such as earthquakes or flooding, to civil conflicts, and to health crises, such as the Ebola outbreak – children’s education can be disrupted and, is often, abandoned.

Education and school give children a sense of normality. During and after emergencies, it is as critical as food and medicine, it gives ability to not only survive, but thrive.

Students all around the world came at the European Parliament to share their stories about school in emergency situations.

The #EmergencyLessons event was supported by Christos Stylianides, Commissioner - Humanitarian Aid & Crisis Management, Linda McAVAN, MEP and UNICEF Deputy Executive Director Justin Forsyth. The project is a partnership between the European Commission’s department for humanitarian aid and civil protection and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Education is fundamental for children to express their full potential and build a prosperous future for themselves and society. It is even more important during emergencies when children are often direct witnesses of atrocities and tragedies. Today, around 37 million children are out of school in crisis-affected countries.

The EU and UNICEF work together to provide children with a place where they can feel safe and continue their education at all times.

The #EmergencyLessons communication campaign tells the stories of Yaroslav and Nastya who, like many other girls and boys, have experienced war and disaster but were able to carry on their studies thanks to the assistance from the EU and UNICEF.

#EmergencyLessons is supported by European sport and TV celebrities and youth influencers: British actor Tom Hiddleston; Italian European Space Agency astronaut, Samantha Cristoforetti; Slovenian basketball player Boštjan Nachbar; and Hungarian news presenter and media personality Kriszta D. Tóth.
