            Ognuno, guardando il mare tranquillo agli splendori del tramonto, o in limpido mattino, o in burrasca, è commosso; ma queste emozioni, l’arcana malinconia, la gioconda festa, la selvaggia sublime voluttà, i poeti hanno, naturalmente, senza paragone più degli altri uomini, sentito e dipinto, e i colori son stati varii, secondo l’indole speciale e la tempra del loro animo e del loro ingegno, il tempo in cui hanno vissuto, il tratto della loro vita in cui hanno scritto.
