Anagallis arvensis - Shepherd's Weatherglass - Enlarged 3x 2189

            About three weeks ago, I introduced you to an eighth- to quarter-inch wildflower I find almost every day whether at Heather Farm, on Mt. Diablo, or as with this one, growing out of a cement block near the wash and under the eucalypts

This is Anagallis arvensis, commonly known as the scarlet pimpernel, red pimpernel, red chickweed, poor man's barometer, poor man's weather-glass, shepherd's weather glass or shepherd's clock, is a species of low-growing annual plant with brightly coloured flower. 

The species has been distributed widely by humans, either deliberately or accidentally. Yep, that pretty much covers the range ;-)

So, why all the names relating to weather? Because those who named it noticed that when it was about to rain, the flower would close. In other words, it is phototropic, reacting to shade or sun although, unlike a sunflower, it does not follow the sun.
