Woke up at 2 AM. Got up at 3. Came into my home office (as opposed to my World Headquarters) and went through my usual routine.

Then, having totally screwed up the world wide web, not just local, I had to reboot my whole morning.

When the computer came back, I found that the *original* "Mexican Folk Art" basket I was working on, had kept all edits, and I was too muddled to look for the original (yet).

Here's what I came up with for your Wednesday morning. This is an Echinopsis: this is a whole Echinopsis missing its environment. And when I got done darkening the background, sideground, and fairground, I was left with what looks to be a basket.

Until I can find the original... Echinopsis is a large genus of cacti native to South America, sometimes known as hedgehog cactus, sea-urchin cactus or Easter lily cactus. The 128 species range from large and treelike types to small globose cacti. The name derives from echinos hedgehog or sea urchin, and opsis appearance, a reference to these plants' dense coverings of spines. So, the people who named it did so after a sleepless night, and I know how they felt.

Ruth Bancroft Garden has several Echinopsis. It should not be confused with an Opuntia, the prickly pear which I did at 6AM: a Prickly Pear reaching 25 feet high and 18 feet wide and, in August, having more than 100 fruit of which I have ... no photos. This cactus was 20 inches tall and tightly put together ... like I was by 6:30.
