Amaryllis - Blood Trumpet Flower 4643

            It's rare that I post two in a day, let alone three, but I wanted to get this one up before my computer crashes again. 

I've remarked before about the lack of definition in the flowers of cacti. Well, the same holds for some succulents. When I saw these two striking blossoms yesterday, I knew I'd nailed the shot because the foliage was sharp, but when I got home and put it up on the monitor, I was (at first) a little disappointed at the flowers.

Dredging the deep, dark recesses, I remembered something and then searched for "bird's-eye view of colors." Sure enough, birds (and bees and compound-eyed critters) see colors and details in sharp relief and differently than we do. Besides, for the hummers and bees, they see the colors that attract them.

I added a little contrast, and got more detail than expected. And that was it. Note that I had the ISO as low as I dared, and that really helps with clarity and definition.

So, before I forget, this is a Blood Trumpet flower built for hummers!  Taken at Ruth Bancroft (Dry) Garden, northern California.
