Barrel Cactus Bloom 9639 - a photo on Flickriver

            This may be the most numerous of blooming cacti at Bancroft Gardens OR this may be the month when they are all in bloom. Whatever, the variations from orange to red and everything in between is astonishing.

These blossoms are photosensitive, and open and close depending upon when the sun hits them and when it fades in late afternoon. They last only one to three days, but I have seen one barrel cactus with seven or eight blossoms ready to burst!
