            What's remarkable about the Manzanita tree is not it's longevity or the fact that it does well in terrible soil and arid conditions. No, what makes it special is its bark ... which is not as bad as its bite. Most manzanitas that we see in the west are gnarled branched "shrubs," but every once in a while, full grown trees, 25-35* feet tall will spring up. OR, the tree is one of the 105 species or subspecies. 

Though the manzanitas trees are said to be only 15-20 feet tall, the one in this image was at least 35 feet (picture taken from a trail walkway above the grove). Manzanita is a common name for many species of the genus Arctostaphylos. They are evergreen shrubs or small trees present in the chaparral biome of western North America, where they occur from Southern British Columbia and Washington to Oregon, California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas in the United States, and throughout Mexico. The word manzanita is the Spanish diminutive of manzana (apple). A literal translation would be little apple.

Native Americans in California used the manzanita to treat poison oak rash. The berries can be eaten raw (though quite sour), made into a cider when dried, and have also been used for upset stomachs which, I assume were caused by eating manzanita berries. 

Some manzanita species are among the rarest plants in the world.[13]

Arctostaphylos hookeri ravenii (Presidio manzanita), an endemic species, is the most endangered and restricted plant in the mainland United States. In 1987 only one specimen remained, at a secret location in the Presidio of San Francisco National Historic Landmark District in San Francisco, California.
