Where the Mighty Babbles 2971 - a photo on Flickriver

            As you leave Yosemite Valley, if you stop for just a bit just after Hetch Hetchy, the "mighty" Merced River becomes a babbling brook. Over the years, we've tended to stop and various spots along the Merced with no particular one being a favorite. This particular spot has been dry and has had a three foot overflow, such is the "normal" wet-dry patterns in California over the decamillennium. The climate hasn't changed. What's changed is that there are 39 million people living in the state, and millions still visiting every year. They all seem oblivious to the fact that this is a semi-arid region of the continent. If it isn't climate change, it's racism.

Now then, the Merced River, in the central part of the U.S. state of California, is a 145-mile tributary of the San Joaquin River flowing from the Sierra Nevada into the San Joaquin Valley. It is most well known for its swift and steep course through the southern part of Yosemite National Park, where it is the primary watercourse flowing through Yosemite Valley. The river's character changes dramatically once it reaches the plains of the agricultural San Joaquin Valley, where it becomes a slow-moving meandering stream. 

There is a place in Yosemite where you can stop when you get to the valley through the northwestern entrance where the Merced is at its best for photographers. From this particular spot, the river is perhaps a half mile wide and you can get it and the Sentinels in one frame. (See below) Expecting that to be the norm in 2012, I stepped out of the car and INTO the Merced. It was at least 12 feet out of its banks, and the park hadn't had the chance to put up warning signs.
