Mustang Phlox and Friends 3157 - a photo on Flickriver

            Mustang Phlox... Leptosiphon montanus (Linanthus montanus) is a species of flowering plant in the phlox family known by the common name mustang clover.Take your pick. I first saw these 1.5 inch flowers in Yosemite National Park at least a decade ago. I saw them in Tuolumne Meadows, the term used to describe a large portion of the Yosemite high country around the meadows. The road ultimately leads to Nevada and Devil's Postpile.But on this day, I was "into" wildflowers. The meadows are fascinating in their own right, but I suggest a leisurely picnic at one of the many turnoffs. 

Note: Tuolumne Meadows road is closed for more of the winter (November through March or even May). When snow is really high in what used to be called a "normal year" and there was "normal rainfall" of 23", then the Tuolumne River runs through and provides the flowers and fields with groundwater. This image was taken during our last visit on our way to Tioga Pass (el. 9,943 ft. / 3,031 m.) which is a mountain pass in the Sierra Nevada of California. State Route 120 runs through it, and serves as the eastern entry point for Yosemite National Park, at the Tioga Pass Entrance Station. It is the highest highway pass in California and in the Sierra Nevada. I probably will never see all of Yosemite, but I'm thankful for what I have seen.

Btw, note the crab spider at the top of the flower and several ants in the center.
