Flame Skimmer and Acquaintance 6468 - a photo on Flickriver

            This is really unusual, a Flame Skimmer Dragonfly and a fly which would normally be prey. Did the fly perch next to the dragonfly. Their sight is as good as any when it comes to a predator ten times its size. And dragonflies can eat 150 mosquitoes a day, so we'll say 70 flies. The dragonfly wasn't full, but it just perched and did nothing. The mandible of the dragonfly could have just reached out and grabbed the fly (that's an amazing thing about the mandible of odonata). So, just a quirk perhaps or good luck for the fly or maybe the dragonfly ordered surf and turf and was just waiting. We'll never know.
