            Widow Skimmer (Libellula luctuosa) is one of the group of dragonflies known as king skimmers. The nymphs live in the water, molting and growing until they are ready to emerge from the water and then molting a final time to reveal their wings. 

This species can be found commonly across the United States (except in the higher Rocky Mountains areas) and in southern Ontario and Quebec. Until last month, they are usually among the three most numerous dragonflies in this (northern California) area, but the numbers of all species dipped in mid-July and are just returning. 

One of the most unusual statements made was that "They are predators that prey on other insects such as mosquitoes.They catch their prey using their legs and use their fangs to bring prey into their mouth." What fangs? Odonata do not have fangs. Dragonflies don't have true teeth but they do have  large, strong mandibles with sharply-pointed serrations.
