Western Red-shouldered Hawk 5030 - a photo on Flickriver

             We headed back to the swamp yesterday to try and get dragonflies or damselflies already laying eggs. (I "got" one last week, but "Card Error" cropped up AFTER I got the shots. My camera has just been acting up... again.)  Anyway, we saw the usual three species of dragonflies, and no damselflies.

As I was getting ready to leave, I looked above me in a gnarled old, but still budding, oak was my old favorite, one of the two resident Red-shouldered hawks that were absent last year. Sitting, pretty, I took this shot.

The red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) is a medium-sized hawk. Its breeding range spans eastern North America and along the coast of California and northern to northeastern-central Mexico. Red-shouldered hawks are permanent residents throughout most of their range, though northern birds do migrate, mostly to central Mexico. An eastern population ranges west through southern Canada from southern New Brunswick and Ontario to the eastern edge of the U.S. Great Plains, south to Florida, the Gulf Coast, and eastern Mexico. Only northernmost populations are migratory. A western population breeds west of the Sierra Nevada from northern California to northern Baja California, and there have been increase sightings in AZ and NM. The western RSH is a resident in the narrowest of ranges, and has much deeper red in the shoulders than the more numerous eastern species.
