What better time to post this old shot of a Downy Woodpecker. Maybe now I will see better the differences between the Nuttall's and Downy though it's still hard to see the difference in size with the Downy being the smallest woodpecker in North America. Downy woodpeckers are native to forested areas, mainly deciduous, of North America. Their range consists of most of the United States and Canada, except for the deserts of the southwest and the tundra of the north. Mostly permanent residents, northern birds may migrate further south; birds in mountainous areas may move to lower elevations.

This Downy was one of a mated pair that had started further excavation of a Nuttall's nest. Fortunately, the hole was facing the open space and there were no branches to cover the opening. It took us two days to discover that THIS Downy had drilled all the way through a five inch branch and could come and go without us noticing. But nesting season is fairly frenetic and all the comings and goings were easily noted. We saw the male and female raise three chicks, and were fortunate to be there from hatching to flight.

I thought that the Downy, Nuttall's, and Acorn woodpeckers completed my "collection," but I forgot the Lewis and the sapsuckers and flickers. I guess I'm satisfied, but you never know what might get lost and show up in the oak woodlands.
