            Arriva's move in August 2024 to increase the frequency on their X38 (Derby to Burton) journeys to every 20 minutes sparked a war with co-operator Trent Barton. The service has in recent memory operated with both companies contributing two vehicles to an evenly-spaced every 20 minute frequency. Reliability issues across Trent's network stemming from resource shortfalls have been well-documented in recent years, and it may well have been that Arriva were hoping they would relinquish their share. Far from this, Trent increased their frequency to every 15 minutes, and in April outshopped five Eclipses freed up from the Ilkeston Flyer with 2+1 seating and a bold orange and black livery. These are actually slightly older than the two Eclipses carrying colours not dissimilar to Arriva's which had operated Trent's journeys for the past few years. Arriva have recently announced they are scaling back to operate every 30 minutes and not at all on Sundays from the end of the current month, though whether Trent will follow and stand down some of their shiny Volvos remains to be seen.

Standard fayre on Arriva's workings, VDL SB200/Wright Pulsar 2 MX09EKT (3739) is seen heading along Curzon Street out of Derby city centre with the 13:00 journey.
