Ju-87A Stuka - a photo on Flickriver

Ju-87A Stuka

The Spanish Civil War was the perfect place for the Germans to test their latest designs in real combat.
Therefore, they sent the fourth prototype Ju-87 there, plus some extra A variant pre-production planes.

The A was easily distinguished from the much more famous B variant used at the start of the WW2 because of the massive spatted undercarriage. These gave problems with the muddy airfields of Spain, so they were simplified on later variants.

Stukas were used against Bilbao, Barcelona and Teruel with excellent results but their usage was extremely secret; therefore at the end of the war, all were returned to Germany, including the remains of the only lost Ju-87 in combat.
