01 Vickers Valiant dropping a Nuclear Bomb

During the Cold War, England built three large strategic bombers at the beginning of the fifties, the Vickers Valiant, the Avro Vulcan and the Handley Page Victor.

The Vickers Valiant was the first of the these three planes to enter service and was used in Combat against Egypt in 1956 during the Suez Crisis. The Victor was also the only V-Bomber to ever drop a nuclear bomb, in this case a Blue Danube weapon on Maralinga, South Australia.

With the development of new and improved Surface to Air Missiles by the Soviet Union (URSS), the Valiants started to perform low altitude missions at the beginning of the Sixties but this mission profile caused extensive cracks and fatigue on the wings, forcing the British to remove the plane from service on January 1965.
