Hornet Queen - a photo on Flickriver

Hornet Queen

            I've never managed decent photographs of hornets (Vespa crabro) and have always hoped to one day get a good shot of a hornet queen. This morning there was one (in a rather moribund state) on the inside of our lounge window! Presumably she flew in from the garden yesterday.

They are somewhat imposing and she kept turning to look at me when I approached. I didn't want to upset her! I decided to get a flower stem from the garden and offer it to her. She slowly climbed on. I went into the garden and got a few shots before she warmed-up sufficiently to fly off. Another box ticked!

The European Hornet, is the UK's largest wasp species.
