Phragmites glowing in the marsh - a photo on Flickriver

            Seedhead plumes of giant reed grass (Phragmites species, Poaceae) at Uihlein Waterfowl Production Area, just south of  the unincorporated community of Waukau, Winnebago County, Wisconsin. 

I do not know which species of reed grass this is. Phragmites australis subsp. americanus (now considered Phragmites americanus by some authorities) is native to North America, but reportedly is less common than the invasive exotic species, Phragmites australis, of Old World origin. I would venture to guess that the stand pictured here is the former of the two taxa.

Uihlein Waterfowl Production Area, is a 2,171-acre preserve managed by the Leopold Wetland Management District, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service mostly in the Town of Utica with parts in the towns of Rushford and Nepeuskun.
