RIP James Watson (1928–2025) Scientist and “deeply controversial figure to the end”

James Dewey Watson (1928–2025) was an American biologist. In 1953, with Francis Crick proposed the double helix structure of the DNA molecule, building on research by Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling. In 1962, Watson, Crick, and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material"

Watson had controversial views on race, claiming that stereotypes associated with racial and ethnic groups have a genetic basis: Jews being intelligent, Chinese not being creative because of selection for conformity, and Indians being servile because of selection under caste endogamy.

In his 2007 memoir, Avoid Boring People: Lessons from a Life in Science, Watson describes his academic colleagues as "dinosaurs", "deadbeats", "fossils", "has-beens", "mediocre", and "vapid” en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Watson
