On a spur of the Peak, between the forests of Peak and Macclesfield, 800 feet above the level of the sea, and on the borders of Cheshire, Lancashire and Derbyshire is "Lyme"-derived from the Latin "limes", or border. In very early days, when part of a royal forest, Lyme may have served as a hunting-lodge for the sovereign and it is supposed that there was even a house on the site before the one referred to in Sir Peter Legh's register of 1465. But this can only be conjecture and not fact.

Apart from the great house, there is, in this isolated situation, no village or even hamlet. To visitors in the eighteenth century the situation made little appeal. One described it "by no means well chosen, as the surround-ing country is bleak, moorish and unfruitful". To another both house and park presented "a tasteless, wasteful grandeur". But today we see considerable merit in the very attributes that depressed these visitors. To the majority of us, whose humdrum lives are imprisoned within congested city streets of unprepossessing aspect, a day spent in the moorish and unfruitful spaces of Lyme Park is not bleak at all but spells freedom. Nor do we, accustomed to the cramped dimensions of our own dwellings, find an hour or two's visit to the "grandeur" of the great house "wasteful", but, on the contrary, artistically pleasing and inspiring.

The fact remains that we, the nation, find ourselves today the guardians of an historic house and park, the beauty of which has accrued over the centuries through the devoted care of one family.
